Five athletes from the Warrenton girls track team survived the Class 4, District 4 meet and will head to the sectional meet Saturday at Mexico. The 800 relay team of Lalita Andrews, Rylie Cox, Allison Tonioli and Emma Housewright finished third in 1 minute, 54.48 seconds.“That was the one relay where I knew we had the best shot to get in,” Warrenton Head Coach Steve Wurtzel said. “The handoffs were smooth and they fought a good hard wind, and they still ran pretty comparable to what they had been.”The quartet currently ranks ninth in the sectional, and faces a tough field Saturday.MICDS leads the sectional with a season-best time of 1:43.91, and all four qualifying teams have run under 1 minute, 50 seconds.“The 4X2 team will definitely be the toughest out of the three to qualify,” Wurtzel said.Andrews also qualified in the high jump, winning the event with a final jump of 5 feet.It was a far cry from her personal-best of 5 feet, 4 inches, but that was by design.“Lalita didn’t really have much competition Saturday with the rain and wind,” Wurtzel said. “It seemed like every girl that could do 4-10 was bowing out. There were only two girls that cleared 4-10, so we held her from there when she cleared five feet to save her for the other races.”Andrews is ranked first in the sectional, and only two other competitors have cleared higher than five feet this season.Barring an injury, she is expected to qualify for the state meet the following week.“I think Lalita and Kayla have really good shots,” Wurtzel said of Kayla Nelson, who is ranked sixth in the sectional in the shot put. “The 4X2 will definitely be the toughest out of the three.”The top four finishes from each event will qualify for the state meet May 28, and Wurtzel hopes his team is well-prepared for another tough field Saturday.“It’s just about refining, going back to the basics and keeping the blood flowing so we’re ready again for Saturday,” he said. “I think it’s about keeping them fresh, managing injuries and mentally keeping them ready, as well.”
