The Warrenton boys soccer team placed second at the GAC North Cup. The Warriors started the tournament strong, beating both Winfield 4-2 and St. Charles West 8-1 in the first two games of pool play.
For their final game of pool play, Warrenton faced off against Washington on Oct. 15, losing 4-1. After the match, both the Warriors and the Blue Jays moved on to the championship game. In pool play, Warrenton had won two and lost one versus Washington winning two and tying one.
With the Warriors and the Blue Jays coming out as the top two teams, they moved onto the first place game for another rematch on Oct. 17.
Eight minutes into the game, Warrenton went down by a goal, but it did not take long for Warrenton’s Hudson Kieffer to respond and bury one in the net. The teams went into halftime tied 1-1.
After battling back and forth for 73 minutes of the game, Washington was able to break through and net two in the goal with five minutes left to play. The final score was 3-1 and Washington was crowned the tournament champions.
“It was a tough game and we did a great job today. I thought we controlled a lot of the game and the kids came out and played extremely hard,” Head Coach John Schulte said.
After having played Washington two days prior, the Warriors changed things up a bit in their formation. They also worked on controlling the ball more and finding passes.
“You could see that it was a world of difference in this game compared to the other day,” Schulte said.
Warrenton was on a seven-game winning streak until they played Washington. Despite having some tough teams left to play in the regular season, Schulte is hoping the team will come out with the same intensity they displayed throughout the championship game.
“We got to battle at the end of the year. We’re coming into a really tough part of our season here at the end, but the kids knew that they played really well and did a great job, so we just got to rebound and come back,” Schulte said.
