The Warrenton football team remains the team to beat. With a 5-0 start to the season and an average of 35.2 points per game while limiting their opponents to 15, the Warriors came out with another win against St. Charles West on Friday 42-14.
The Warriors came out strong and after the first half, they were up 28-7. Head Coach Jason Koper noted the team played a great first half and came out fast, executed on their run game and had good passes.
Koper went on to say both lines played well. He had asked them to come out more aggressively and with more intensity and they did.
“I’m very proud of their effort. We have just a few things to clean up, but like I told the guys when we got in the huddle, it feels great to be 5-0 two years in a row,” Koper said.
Warrenton tried a couple of new things offensively and is still working on trying to enhance their prep playbook a little bit, with hopes of getting more guys touches on the ball.
“With cooler weather, we were able to open up some things we’ve been working on. I thought they adjusted well and our line played really well in the first half and controlled the line of scrimmage,” Koper said.
In addition to tacking on another win, of course, a couple of school records were broken as well.
Austin Haas broke the school record for career points which he now holds with 286 points and career rushing touchdowns with 45. This is the senior’s third school record he has broken this season.
Haas recorded three rushing touchdowns throughout the night and broke the school record on his third touchdown. He rushed for 214 yards on 27 carries. Brandon Johnson rushed for 108 yards and threw for 160 yards and two touchdowns.
Deadrick Forrest put up the first six points for the Warriors after receiving a 36-yard touchdown pass. Austin White had a 25-yard touchdown reception and Johnson finished the game out with a 17-yard rushing touchdown.
In addition, Brody Reel had 48 receiving yards, followed by Forrest with 42, White with 36 and Mason Thompson with 29.
On the defensive side, White, Kadin Stroer and Keegan Mellegaard all recorded one interception. Javon Jones and Chance Klasing both recovered fumbles. Stroer and Jack Morris each had one sack. Stroer had 15 tackles and Cole Meyer recorded seven.
“The thing I asked them to do is come out more aggressive in the first half and they did that. They did a really good job coming out with intensity,” Koper said.
This Friday, Warrenton will travel for an away game against Holt at 7 p.m.
“As long as we play well, we feel like we have a chance to win every week. And tonight, I thought it was a big step. It was a very exciting day for us and there was great energy throughout the whole game, so we got to keep that going,” Koper said.
