The Warrenton cross country teams participated in their second meet of the season at the Fort Zumwalt North Twilight Meet. The girls were missing some key runners, but returning state qualifier Alexis Ruff led the Warriors.
Ruff received a time of 23 minutes and 38 seconds in the first meet of the season. On Sept. 5, she nearly cut her time down by a minute placing seventh overall with a time of 22:47.
Head Coach Jeremy Collins noted that Ruff was in 25th place, but slowly passed more and more people throughout the course.
“The only thing I can say is it was a fantastic race. She is already over a minute faster than last year at this time,” Collins said. “She came away from the race with a lot of confidence.”
Ruff is currently a sophomore and will be looking to qualify for state once again, especially with one year of experience under her belt. Sophie Bennett, Ava Schneider and Abby Kackley also ran in the varsity race. The runners ran part of the race together, making sure to push one another to do
their best.
Collins noted that Bennett had a great second half of the race and improved her time by a minute and six seconds from the first meet to place 37th. Schneider completed her first high school race with a time of 28:05 and placed 141st.
Kackley followed Schneider, placing 143rd with a time of 28:15 and Taryn Sharp placed 212th in 33:09. Overall, the girls took home 15th place as a team out of 17 schools and the boys team placed 10th out of 22 teams in the junior varsity race.
Matt Cravens led the Warriors on the boys side, placing 44th in 19:15. Dylan Coleman came in 48th place in 19:24 and Jacob Beckemeyer finished in 19:44.
“Matt has had some great workouts and it is just a matter of time before his times start dropping,” Collins said.
Korben Johnson placed 107th in 20:53, Noah Cline placed 114th in 21:00, Trenton Hummel placed 209th in 23:05 and Jonathan Sweitzer placed in between Cline and Hummel.
Collins added that Sweitzer’s time did not get recorded.
“I saw a lot of the kids just being tough out there and competing. Racing is different than going out and running,” Collins said. “We have a team full of runners like this [and] eventually, our times are going to drop.”
The Warriors will race in their next meet on Sept. 14 at Forest Park. The field will include schools representing six states
