Despite suffering their third loss of the season, the Warrenton girls basketball team's goal remains the same: win the conference.
The Warriors currently hold a 1-3 season record after a 45-32 loss to Sullivan on Dec. 9. With over a week of no games to play, the team is hoping to hone in and improve on what they are struggling with before they open conference play Dec. 17 against St. Charles.
“I’m hoping we just get a lot more confidence. This year, we’re very young and many don’t have the varsity experience, so I’m hoping we build confidence and we keep getting our reps so we’re ready for the game,” Head Coach Hannah Logan said.
Fundamentally, Logan wants to see an improvement in scoring and making good passes that can lead to shooting.
“I think we are noticing that the scoring is a really big thing, as we lost big scorers last year,” Logan said. “We’re looking for someone who’s going to step up and take on that 10 to 15 points every game for us.”
Logan noted that scoring was an area the Warriors struggled in during their game against Sullivan. At the end of the first quarter, Warrenton trailed 17-8. At halftime, they were down 28-14.
The Warriors were able to stop the Eagles’ offensively in the second half, only allowing Sullivan 17 points, compared to their 28 in the first half.
Nyasia Love led the team in points with 13, while Erin Klasing and Savannah Miller tallied seven points apiece.
“We had several chances, lots of nice in and out buckets, but we’ve got to find a way to score. Our goal in the second half was, we got to stop them and score. We stopped them, but unfortunately, we did not score,” Logan said. “Then, we have to be able to handle the ball and make good passes that hit our teammates in the chest.”
Logan also noted many positives from the game, touting their 20 offensive rebounds. Makayla Witthaus recorded seven, while Klasing tallied six.
“I thought we did hustle and we did play hard. We got it [the score] down into short spurts, down to five one time and we got down to 11 in the second half,” Logan said.
The Warriors will play at St. Charles on Dec. 17 starting at 6:30 p.m.
“It’s a big week for us next week. It will be our first conference game and one of our goals is to win conference,” Logan said.
