Warriors hoping to make another district run

After reaching the district championship the year prior, the Warrenton boys basketball team is
itching to get back to that spot.
“Several of the returners were on that championship run last year and they’d like to get back to
it. Other guys that were on junior varsity last year and came up to the varsity level this year are
hungry to see if they can get to that championship game as well,” Head Coach Mark Thomas
said.
The Warriors will enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed and take on No. 5 seed North Point on March 5 at 5:30 p.m.
The other teams in the district are Fort Zumwalt East, Fort Zumwalt South, Hannibal, McCluer,
McCluer North, Holt and North Point. Thomas said this year’s district will be pretty competitive,
but it is a winnable district.
“I told them if you can get by in that first round, your second round opponent is going to be
somebody that’s very good,” Thomas said. “It’s going to take a lot and we have to do things
right.”
In last year’s Class 5, District 4 tournament at St. Charles, Warrenton beat Parkway North and
Holt in its first two rounds before losing to Fort Zumwalt South in the title game.
Thomas said that playing as a cohesive unit will be a key for the Warriors if they want to achieve success in the postseason.
“We can’t have any one individual be the guy to step up and lead us. We’re not built that way,”
Thomas said. “We need it to be a collective group effort and they have to trust in each other on
both ends of the court for us to be successful.”
He believes the Warriors have a decent chance, adding it is a winnable district but it could be any team’s chance on any given night.
Thomas emphasized the importance of being able to follow game plans and concentrating on the little things that need to be done.
“Most of our focus has been on us and trying to get things under control. In the postseason, you can’t just worry about yourself anymore. You have to worry about the opponent as well,” he said.
The Warriors will carry an 11-14 record into districts.
