One all-stater has moved on and another remains for the Warrenton softball team.Much was anticipated from Jenny Jansen as a freshman and more will be expected this season as she proved her merits a year ago.The sophomore will be counted on for leadership as she makes the move from centerfield to shortstop.Coach Trevor Hibbs says the Warriors will continue to chase a goal that has been within reach the past several seasons. They will again be seeking a district title, returning what Hibbs feels like is a solid lineup.“I feel like we should be very competitive in every game,” said Hibbs. “If we execute, we should come out on top. If we let up on defense or our pitchers aren’t hitting their spots, we could pay the price.”It will begin with Jansen, who batted .513 with 41 hits last season, but the Warriors have plenty of depth. They return a pair of pitchers in junior Taylor Nordwald and sophomore Kaylee Anderson.“Locating their spots will be key for their success, and our defense has to be solid behind them,” said Hibbs. “I don’t see our pitchers as strikeout pitchers. Hopefully we can pitch to contact and get a ground out or pop out.”Warrenton also reutrns its starting catcher in Abby Meyers, who was a wall behind the plate last season.“I’ve seen her get better every year, and she’s coming in even stronger this year,” said Hibbs.First base is still not solidified, but Hibbs anticipates Amanda Lafaver, who returns from an injury, could play that role.At second base the Warriors will rely on their lone senior Rachel Earlewine. When not pitching, Anderson or Nordwald will play third base.“Taking Jenny out of centerfield is a big defensive move,” said Hibbs, of the all-state centerfielder. “It’s a big hit to the outfield when you take her athleticism out of the outfield.”Instead, Hibbs is looking to freshman Kelsey Huenfeld to make an immediate impact in the outfield. She will likely be joined by Erica Rugh and possibly Lafaver. Rugh batted .378 with 31 hits a year ago.“She had a good season last year and was swinging the bat well,” said Hibbs. “She hit the ball with authority.”Rugh will be a strength in the batting order, which will likely be led off by Earlewine, who scored 24 runs last season.Anderson will bat second, followed by Jansen and possibly Rugh.“I feel like we’ve got some girls who will put the bat on the ball with some authority,” said Hibbs. “We’ve got some pop and some girls who will hit for average also.”Hibbs is also expecting sophomores Brittany Eubanks and Emma Tinnin to contribute at times. The Warriors made minor scheduling changes, moving from the Union Tournament to Troy.“This Troy Tournament is going to be a good test for us early on,” said Hibbs.Warrenton will open by traveling to the Timberland Jamboree on Saturday.KAYLEE ANDERSONDerrick Forsythe photo.
