After dropping their first game in the Warrenton Winter Shootout 51-26 to No. 1 seed Timberland on Jan. 13, the Warrenton girls basketball team’s aim has shifted, and they are now striving to win the consolation bracket.
“If we play Wednesday like we did tonight, we’ll be okay against our next opponent,” Head Coach Hannah Logan said on Jan. 13.
Since playing Timberland, the Warriors defeated Riverview Gardens 53-20. They will move on to the consolation game on Jan. 17, and take on Moberly at 5:30 p.m.
Against Timberland, Warrenton was down at the end of each quarter (10-6, 19-9, 31-16).
Logan noted that the Warriors are still struggling to find the net, but she was satisfied with their defensive efforts.
“We played probably the best that we could have, being the eighth seed against the one,” Logan said. “I thought we stayed disciplined and we played really well on the defensive end. On the offensive end, we just got to get a basket.”
Claire Goldsmith and Zoe Duncan led the team in points with five each, while Erin Klasing and Savannah Miller tallied four apiece. Makayla Witthaus recorded eight rebounds.
With the Warriors going into the game as the underdog, Logan added they wanted to shoot for an upset.
“We said we had nothing to lose. We said to win the hustle plays and give it your all,” Logan said.
The Warriors now hold a 2-7 record. Despite this, Logan is noticing improvements in offensive turnovers and staying in defensive gaps. She also noted it’s helpful having Sophia Benke back on the court.
“I feel like we are more confident with her. She’s handling the ball most of the time as well as bringing points for us too, and she kind of gets it going for us on the defensive end,” Logan said.
Overall, Timberland and will battle Liberty Wentzville in the championship match at 8:30 p.m. In the third-place game, Mexico and Francis Howell North will play at 7 p.m. Warrenton will take on Moberly in the fifth-place game at 5:30 p.m. and Riverview Gardens and Hazelwood East will battle for seventh-place at 4 p.m.
