Warriors claim consolation bracket

Before leaving the locker room to face Moberly in the consolation final of the Warrenton Winter Shootout, the Warrenton girls basketball team had just one simple goal: Bring home a win.

And the Warriors did just that.

Warrenton defeated Moberly 42-28 on their home court Friday, Jan. 17. Not only did the tournament end as a success in Head Coach Hannah Logan’s eyes, but the Warriors are now on a three-game winning streak as of Jan. 21.

“We just wanted to beat them and show we weren’t the eighth seed of our home tournament,” Logan said.

The Warriors were tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter. It was not until the second quarter that Warrenton was able to create some separation as they went into halftime up 19-10. At the start of the third, Erin Klasing came out strong and put up seven points quickly, allowing them to stretch their lead to 31-17 at the end of the quarter.

Klasing led the way with 11 points. Nyasia Love recorded eight, while Savannah Miller had seven.

“We had a lot of girls step up tonight when we got into foul trouble...I was impressed with both the offense and defense,” Logan said.

The Warriors went 2-1 in the tournament, dropping their first game to Timberland 51-26, only to rally back two days later and dominate Riverview Gardens 53-20.

In the final, Logan noted when a Moberly player got into foul trouble late in the second half, it was a pivotal point that allowed them to control the momentum.

“We just said keep attacking, keep going down and play straight up on defense,” Logan said. “I think getting them in foul trouble was motivation for us to keep going.”

Throughout the game, Warrenton keyed in on remaining composed and disciplined, and making sure they were keeping up a consistent amount of shots.

“[I told them] we can’t go minutes with no scoring. If our shots aren’t going, we have to get to the basket, and if we get fouled, we have to make some free throws,” Logan said.

Overall, Logan was pleased with the tournament and is hoping they can achieve more success further along in the season.

“There were very competitive games throughout this week, so I’m hoping after Wednesday’s win and tonight’s win, we roll into two conference games next week and we can keep building and keep improving our record,” Logan said.

Warrenton will host GAC North opponent Orchard Farm on Jan. 24 at 5:30 p.m.
