Warriors and Wildcats are district ready

The Warrenton and Wright City boys soccer teams have ended their regular seasons and are now preparing for districts.

The Warriors ended the season with a 13-10 record, with notable wins against Winfield and Pacific. The team also placed first at the Wright City tournament and second at the GAC North Cup.

Warrenton was picked as the No. 8 seed in the Class 3, District 4 tournament. They will play Hannibal (23-2), the top seed, on Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m at Fort Zumwalt South. The Warriors previously lost to the Pirates 9-1 on Oct. 24, but Head Coach John Schulte noted that anything can happen once the postseason begins.

The Warriors also played Hannibal in the first round of districts the year prior, only losing 2-1.

“They’re a really good team, so we have some things cut out for us that we got to work on,” Schulte said. “I can’t wait to get in there and play them.”

Schulte noted the advantage that comes with playing a team twice, such as knowing who their strong players are, what their set pieces look like and overall, how they play.

“We just have to take away some of the strengths and I think we’ll make a game of it,” Schulte said.

Throughout the season, Schulte noted the team’s progression in finding their defensive shape and moving the ball around.

“The kids are playing really well. We just need to keep it up and keep mistakes to a minimum and capitalize on our opportunities,” Schulte said.

No. 7 Wright City (4-18) will play at Southern Boone against No. 2 Father Tolton Regional Catholic (11-12) on Nov. 2 at 12 p.m in the Class 2, District 4 tournament.

Neither Wright City or Father Tolton have played each other before, but they do have common opponents.

With the game coming up, Head Coach Eric Deal has been working with the team over the past week on set plays, staying on their mark and scoring.

“We’ve got to put those opportunities away. It really makes a difference,” Deal said.

With the end of the regular season nearing, Deal is looking to try some new things to see how the team responds, such as setting up a more aggressive formation in hopes of generating more offensive play.

“I try to make sure that we have a strong defense, but I might venture tonight just to kind of see how the team responds to it and then I can make a decision based on that,” Deal said.

He is also hoping to end the regular season on a positive note, so they go into Saturday’s game with more of an incentive.

“We need to stay focused and try to make sure that we have good games, so that way we go into the game on Saturday with some positive energy,” Deal said.

Despite the stats of the season, Deal noted he has been blessed with the seniors, hard workers and great leadership.
