Record Staff WriterAfter a heartbreaking 5-4, 10-inning loss on Monday to Bowling Green, the Warrenton softball team felt like it had something to prove against conference foe St. Charles West on Tuesday. What a difference 24 hours makes. Before rain called the game in the bottom of the third inning, the Warriors were up 9-0. In the top of the third, Warrenton’s entire lineup came to the plate and pushed across six runs in the process.Warrenton Coach Trevor Hibbs said the loss to Bowling Green was a call to attention of sorts for his team.“It was just a really good wakeup call for us,” said Hibbs, whose team is 19-2 overall and had a 18-game winning streak snapped. “It wasn’t like the game wasn’t right there for us. We took the lead from them, and then they came back and took it from us and won the game. It’s definitely a good learning thing for us and we need to keep concentrating on what our job is, and what our plan is when the ball is hit to us. It was definitely an uncharacteristic game for us.”Both offensive and defensive miscues spelled trouble in the game against Bowling Green — a game that was back and forth throughout. The Lady Warriors scored a run in the top of the 10th, but Bowling Green pushed across two runs in the bottom half for the victory. In the field, Warrenton committed two errors — atypical for a team that has only committed 16 errors all season.Hibbs said the team knows what it needs to do to clean up errors and play the kind of softball to win games as the season hits the home stretch.“After the game yesterday we just talked about the mistakes we made offensively and defensively,” Hibbs said. “We know we’re better than that. Next time we knew we couldn’t make those same mistakes. We’re going to learn from that and grow from it.”The Warriors host Winfield on Thursday, a team it could potentially see in the district tournament. Warrenton defeated Winfield 15-4 in a previous meeting last week. On Saturday, the team travels to Francis Howell Central for the final game of the regular season.Warrenton hosts the district tournament beginning Oct. 7. Hibbs said the team simply needs to get back to the softball the team knows how to play in order to be successful.“We just know we need to run the bases and play defense the way we know we can,” Hibbs said. “When it comes down to it we just need to play the game.”
