Warrenton soccer player Dillen Mayfield parlayed a record-breaking senior season into a scholarship at Concordia University-Chicago.
He formally committed to play for the Cougars Feb. 10 and plans on studying special education.
“It’s been my dream since I was little to play college soccer, and now it’s finally here,” Mayfield said. “It feels nice.”
A versatile player for Warrenton, Mayfield played nearly every position during his high school career.
He scored 20 goals last season, picked up nine assists and filled in at goalie when needed.
“He’s a great motivator and leader out on the field,” Warrenton Head Coach John Schulte said. “He’s going to be missed not only for scoring goals, but for being a leader out there and getting everyone motivated and up for games.”
Mayfield holds school records with 65 career goals and 155 career points, and Schulte said he will miss Mayfield’s vision on the field next season.
“He always knew where to go with the ball,” Schulte said. “His control of the ball is great, and he keeps his head up and finds passes. He always knew where to pass and when to shoot.”
Mayfield said he wants to improve on his conditioning and first touch between now and the beginning of his college career.
“It’s going to be a big jump up to the next level,” he said.
Mayfield joins a Concordia program that finished last season 6-11-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
“I’ve always thought I was going to go there, and when I visited again I just fell in love with the atmosphere,” he said. “Being 10 minutes from downtown Chicago is really nice, too.”
He credited the young coaching staff, led by Head Coach Micah Middendorf, for turning the program around and thinks more success is heading Concordia’s way in the near future.
His high school coach agrees.
“With his knowledge and skill, when he gets up there with kids that are similar to him, the sky is the limit,” Schulte said. “I think if he keeps working hard, we’ll be hearing some more about him in college.”
