The Warrenton seniors combined for five wins in the final home matches of their careers Feb. 3.
The Warriors beat Fort Zumwalt East and Hannibal in a quadwrangler that was overshadowed by the season-ending injury to senior Dan Filipek.
“I think they responded really well, considering the circumstances,” Warrenton Head Coach Kevin Fowler said. “It was definitely one of the weirdest nights I’ve experienced as a coach.”
Senior Jacob Null went 2-0 with a pair of pins in the 145-pound division, which included a pin of Hannibal’s Harry Vessell.
Vessell beat Null earlier in the season, 5-1.
“He came out early, took him down and put him on his back,” Fowler said. “That was really good to see.”
First-year varsity wrestler and senior Adrien Gillette picked up a late pin over Fort Zumwalt East’s Gage Barnard in a 182-pound bout, and 195-pounder Jacob Manion pinned both his opponents to finish the regular season with 94 career wins.
Fowler said he was pleased with his seniors’ performances.
“There are a lot of career wins and a lot of accomplishments in that group,” he said. “We came out and wrestled pretty well against Hannibal, then came out and put a pretty good win on Zumwalt East.”
Warrenton beat Hannibal 54-12, and Fort Zumwalt East 48-28.
Other Warrenton winners included James Biship (145 pounds), Jerrett Villinger (152) and Drake Meine (170).
Jake Trittler helped out the cause with a pin of Hannibal’s Nigel McIntosh at 132 pounds.
“If we can get some wins down low, we’re pretty tough to beat in a dual environment,” Fowler said. “And he did just that.”
With Filipek out for the season, Warrenton’s stranglehold from 152 pounds to 195 pounds is loosened heading into the district tournament Friday and Saturday at Fort Zumwalt North.
The top four wrestlers from each weight class qualify for the state tournament next week at the University of Missouri, and Fowler hopes at least six of his wrestlers qualify.
District seedings and brackets will be determined Thursday night.
“If everything went right, we would have eight qualify,” he said. “But anything more than six would be a great day.”
