It was a day of close calls for the Warrenton boys track team.Facing the rigors of having moved up to Class 4, the Warriors managed to advance to sectionals in just five events during Saturday’s district meet at Parkway Central. They were just one spot away, finishing fifth, in five other events.“I feel bad for them, but you’ve got to perform well on that day to make it through,” said boys Coach Steve McDowell. “Overall, I thought we did a great job on Saturday — even the ones who didn’t make it through.”A couple of those who qualified were expected while a few more were perhaps a surprise.Coming off winning a pair of state medals last season, senior Jordon Washington was a likely candidate to push past districts, and he did just that in both of his open sprint events.Washington won the 100-meter race, clocking an 11.14-second finish. He also qualified in the 200-meter dash, placing fourth with a time of 23.06 seconds.“He did a phenomenal job,” said McDowell. “We had talked before the meet about holding nothing back. He did a really nice job in both of his events and has a great opportunity this coming weekend.”The other qualifiers were less suspecting, including first-year track competitor Braydan Chmiel, who placed second in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 10 inches.“He’s really come a long way throughout the whole season,” said McDowell. “That was quite a surprise. His hard work this season has paid off. He’s got another good opportunity to continue what he’s doing.”Junior Jacob Crump has been a steady medalist all season for the Warriors in each of his hurdling events. He was able to slide through to sectionals with a fourth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles, crossing in 42.46 seconds.Crump placed seventh in the 110-meter race at 17.32 seconds. The Warriors’ final qualifying event on the boys side was the 1,600-meter relay team, consisting of freshman Dylan Chandler, junior Jacob Crump and seniors Dane Huck and Brian Sanders.“He nosed the kid out narrowly for fourth spot,” said McDowell. “He ran pretty much what he’s been running. The competition for the fourth spot got him over the edge. He’s been a consistent performer all year long in that 300.”“We really thought he and Jared (Kilpack) had a good opportunity in the pole vault,” said McDowell. For the girls team, it was a rather unfamiliar experience for Coach Mike Spoede during his final year with the program. He advanced just one competitor on to sectionals, as senior Madeline Carlson qualified in the mile race with a time of 5:48 for a fourth-place finish. She narrowly missed out in the two-mile race with a fifth-place finish.Spoede said he was hopeful several other events would qualify, including the 3,200-meter relay team.“The 4x800 team had a definite chance to battle with Zumwalt South for that fourth spot,” said Spoede. “We just didn’t knock off the time like we usually do at this time of year.”The Warriors had just come off winning the GAC Conference meet, which Spoede says may have had an adverse affect.“The biggest thing was it was a letdown coming off the conference,” said Spoede. “It was a huge meet with the two classes being there at the same time with the district.”Warrenton will compete this Saturday in the Class 4 sectional meet at MICDS.
