An exhausting day packed with five matches resulted in three victories for the Warrenton volleyball team at the Seckman Tournament on Saturday. The Warriors improved to 10-4-1 on the season, winning their pool before losing in the semifinals of bracket play.“This was by far our best day of play all season,” asserted Coach Kristen Van Horn. “Our girls showed they weren’t going to take a series off. We were ready to come out and show Warrenton is a team to be talked about and we proved that.”The Warriors opened the day by splitting a pair of sets (25-19, 23-25) with Sullivan.“I think we kind of caught Sullivan off guard a little bit,” said Van Horn. “Our girls came out ready to put the ball down, and we made them work hard.”In the second match, Warrenton was dominant in dispatching Crystal City in two sets (25-14, 25-14).“Their offense was a little slower, which gave us an advantage,” acknowledged Van Horn. “We had great passing and serving all day. Our serving is something we’ve been struggling with all season, but that wasn’t a concern on Saturday.”After an extensive break, the Warriors took their third meeting with Herculaneum in two sets (25-21, 25-14) as well.“That was a tough match for us,” said Van Horn. “They had some pretty good hitters.”Van Horn made lineup adjustments after her team dropped the opening set.“We weren’t playing the smartest game and made more mistakes than we should have early,” said Van Horn. “After the first loss we changed our lineup a little bit.”She moved Maddy Sutherland from the middle to the right side and shifted Nicole Hardt to the middle.“Nicole is an outstanding blocker, and that was one of her best games,” said Van Horn. “Maddy did a good job of using her defensive skills.”The Warriors were more dominant in the final two sets, anxiously looking forward to facing Zumwalt West in bracket play.Van Horn says her team performed well, but fatiguebegan to take a toll during a three-set (17-25, 25-23, 14-25) defeat.“We had incredibly long rallies, and they would not let the ball drop on the floor,” said Van Horn. “West has a great defensive team. The third set was a really tough loss, because we had played so great that second set.”Morgan Boesel was named to the All-Tournament team after collecting 18 kills. Daphne Meine finished the day with 27 kills, while Rachael Reckamp recorded 19 kills.
Senior setter Chelsea Crump and the Warrenton volleyball team won three matches during the Seckman Tournament.
