Warrenton falls to Winfield Tuesday afternoon

The Warrenton girls soccer team wasn’t able to complete the sweep of Gateway Athletic Conference North foe Winfield Tuesday afternoon, losing a 3-1 home contest.

Winfield took a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the game off a corner kick, but Warrenton responded early in the second half.

Dominique Duello received a cross from Macie Sommer and put the ball in the back of the net to tie the game at 1.

Warrenton began to pressure Winfield more in the final 40 minutes of action, creating scoring chances and keeping the game close before a pair of late Winfield goals sealed the game.

“We weren’t happy with the outcome, but they came together as a team,” Warrenton Head Coach Amy Wargowsky said. “They just told me how they are feeling better with how they’re playing, and every game we’re looking for improvement.”

Junior midfielder Macie Sommer summed up her team’s performance simply.

“It felt like soccer tonight,” she said. “And that was nice to see.”

After back-to-back losses recently to St. Charles West and Fort Zumwalt North in which the Warriors were outscored 17-0, Sommer said Tuesday’s 3-1 loss had plenty of bright spots.

“Last year, we had a lot of talented girls, but sometimes we didn’t have a lot of fight,” she said. “This year we might not have as much talent, but we’ve got a ton of fight, and it shows.”

Unlike the aforementioned lopsided losses, the Warriors created periodic scoring chances against Winfield.

“But we’ve got to finish,” Wargowsky said. “We’re passing better and getting shots, but we need more goals.”

Most of Warrenton’s chances in the offensive zone Tuesday were snuffed out by the Winfield defense or resulted in shots that missed the net.

The Warriors take on St. Charles West Thursday at home and travel to O’Fallon Christian Tuesday.

“We need to continue to work on finishing,” Sommer said. “We get so close but we can’t get it in the goal. But we’ve been improving every time out.”
