The Warrenton boys volleyball team played its first match in program history on March 21 against Timberland in front of a packed gymnasium filled with parents, students and community members.
“The crowd was way bigger than I thought it was going to be with it being spring break,” Coach Jake Brown said. “The community came out and really supported us. I think everybody’s excited and getting behind the new sport, which is pretty awesome to see.”
Unfortunately, the Warriors didn’t celebrate a victory as they lost 25-17, 25-13, 25-9. Brown said despite the loss, he was pleased with the way his team performed.
“Everybody’s in the huddle at the end of the game and they were already talking about how they’re ready for Orchard Farm next week,” Brown said.
Players had their share of pregame jitters during the historic first match. To ease the nerves, the team spent the day bonding and enjoying each other’s company.
Whether it was having team lunch, listening to music while setting up the court, watching game film, or supporting the junior varsity team, it was a day marked by positivity.
“It was really good to get the jitters out,” Brown said. “Everybody was here for the junior varsity game cheering each other on. There was lots of positivity, lots of jitters, butterflies– just overall, a great experience.”
Brown’s biggest takeaway from the game was the profound leadership from his team.
“The guys never got down and they kept coming in with positivity,” he said. “This is a really good group of kids and I think we’re going to be able to overcome tough losses like this.”
Brown said in order for his team to get better, it must learn to play faster and more intensely.
“We focused a lot on the basics,” Brown said. “I think we just need to pick it up a little bit in practice as far as the speed and intensity of the play.”
Brown said he liked using the nine-man rotation throughout the game, noting his team was able to substitute frequently.
Statistically, Isaac Wagner led with six points while Kaleb Lauck had three. Matthew Faubion had two kills and five assists. Austin White and Wagner both tallied two kills each and Brayden Brown, Lauck and Wagner had one ace apiece.
“I’m proud of the guys and I hope that we continue having the crowds and having the support,” Brown said.
Warrenton will play a road match against Orchard Farm at 5 p.m. on March 27.
