One week earlier, the Warriors sprinted their way to the championship at the St. Dominic Crusader Invitational, beating out GAC North rivals St. Charles and Orchard Farm.

The team tallied 161 points on the cold and windy afternoon.

“It was nice because I think the kids came out and performed well,” Warrenton boys Head Coach Steve McDowell said. “It wasn’t the best conditions, but it was something they really wanted. One of our goals this year was to win a meet, so to be able to do that early on is great.”

Sprint relays continued to be a boost to Warrenton’s point total, with the 400- and 800-meter relay teams winning their respective races.

Sophomores Logan Dowd, Nolan Chmiel and Dylan Smith, along with freshman Jacob Parker, took first in the 400 relay in 46.45 seconds.

Smith and Chmiel then joined senior Dylan Chandler and sophomore Sam Smith in the 800, winning in 1:37.27.

“It wasn’t their best times of the year, but in those conditions it’s just really tough to have those kinds of great times,” McDowell said. “But the handoffs were smooth and there wasn’t a glitch at all the entire time, and that’s always good to see. They’re young too. We have some sophomores out there, and a freshman in our 4X1. We have speed, and they work so well together, which helps in the handoffs.”

Chandler, Chmiel and Sam Smith continued their day in the 1,600 relay, and along with sophomore Paul Sanders, helped lead the Warriors to a second-place finish (3:47.41).

Dylan Smith also won the long jump with a final distance of 18 feet, 5 1/2 inches.

Junior Nathan Nordwald and freshman Ben Sommer picked up 16 points in the 1,600, finishing first and third, respectively.

Nordwald won the race in 4:51.28.

“Then they came back and competed well in the 2-mile (Nordwald finished fourth, Sommer finished fifth), and both of their times dropped in that race,” McDowell said. “It’s great to have Nate healthy again, and Ben is just a good, young, talented kid, too.”
