The Warrenton boys basketball team will get a chance at revenge in the first round of the 2018 Warrenton Winter Classic.
The Warriors (6-2) were given the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 Holt (5-4) Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Holt beat Warrenton Dec. 4, 65-55, although the Warriors were not at full strength.
Senior point guard Brenden Smith sat out with strep throat.
“The team and I are excited to have the opportunity to get another shot at them,” Warrenton Head Coach Mark Thomas said. “I felt we missed some key points in the game to give ourselves a better chance to win.”
Holt’s Anthony Jones led both teams with 17 points in the first meeting, and four different Holt players scored in double figures.
Warrenton senior guard Randy McRoberts led the Warriors with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting, and senior forward Caleb Strauss added 15.
Sophomore guard Dylan Smith chipped in seven, but the rest of the offense remained stagnant.
“We will use the film for adjustments,” Thomas said, “but we will mainly focus on running our system to the best of our ability instead of scheming for the opponent.”
Other first-round matchups include No. 2 Liberty vs. No. 7 Hannibal, and No. 3 Fort Zumwalt West vs. No. 6 Fort Zumwalt East.
The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
The winner of Tuesday’s Warrenton and Holt rematch will likely face top-seeded Columbia Rock Bridge in Thursday’s semifinals.
The Bruins face No. 8 Elsberry Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
“I would welcome the opportunity to face Rock Bridge if we can get to the semi’s,” Thomas said. “They are a top level team in Class 5 and would really let us know where we are at.”
