Warrenton Baseball Relies on Bullpen

By Derrick Forsythe, Record Sports Editor
It was a matter of survival for the Warrenton baseball team on Monday. The Warriors were short on pitching after playing three games in as many days, so getting by with a 7-6 over University City was sufficient, according to Coach Eric Burle.“It was a situation where we were happy just coming away with a win,” said Burle. “We were able to jump on them early, and that helped.”Warrenton employed three different pitchers, having exhausted their starters at the Kirksville Tournament over the weekend.“We knew going into the weekend that we would be limited on our pitching for Monday,” said Burle. “We’d been able to give several different guys some work, and they were able to get us through the game.”Freshman Dallas Johnson opened the game on the mound, pitching a scoreless first inning before the Warriors moved ahead 2-0 in the second.University City countered with a run in the bottom of the inning and took a 5-2 lead in the third after connecting on a two-run home run.But the Warriors made their host earn their runs, not giving up any free base passes.“We didn’t walk anybody, so that was a big help,” said Burle. “When you’re pitching some different guys, you hope you can make the plays behind them.”Arik Rader replaced Johnson in the fourth inning, tossing three scoreless innings. It allowed the Warriors to claw their way back into the contest, tacking on three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.Junior Brandon Moeller closed out the game on the mound, holding University City to one run and securing the win for Warrenton.Johnson allowed four earned runs, while Rader gave up two hits and struck out five.Moeller allowed two hits, before striking out the side. He also had a solid day at the plate, going 4-for-4, with a pair of doubles, two runs and two RBIs.“Brandon has really been hitting the ball well in the last couple games,” said Burle. “We’re just trying figure out how the lineup works the best.”Another major concern for the Warriors has been the absence of senior captain Jakob Junker, who was diagnosed with a torn hamstring and is out indefinitely. It means moving without one of their best hitters and infielders.“Not having Junker puts a wrench in the season, but I think we’ve been able to grind out a couple wins,” said Burle.Warrenton is currently 7-5 and maintains a 2-0 record in the conference with the majority of games having been rescheduled. The Warriors await a busy gauntlet of four GAC games in as many days later week.“We’re comfortable with where we’re at,” said Burle. “If you told me that 12 games in we’d be 7-5, I’d be okay with that.”
Brandon Moeller closed the game on the mound and went 4-for-4 at the plate for the Warriors.
