Warrenton Alderman Approve EEZ Draft Plan

An effort to establish an enhanced enterprise zone (EEZ) in Warren County moved one step closer to reality Tuesday. The Warrenton Board of Aldermen voted 5-1 to endorse the plan and also to adopt an ordinance declaring the portion of the city within the EEZ boundaries as blighted based on inadequate street or roadway layout. Aldermen voting to support the plan included Jim Dreyer, John Cornell, Karen Casserly, Gary Auch and John Clark. Ward 2 Alderman Fred Flake cast the lone dissenting vote. He did not elaborate on his decision following the action. The Warren County Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed EEZ this Thursday, May 23, at 11 a.m. at the county’s Administration Building. Following the hearing, commissioners are expected to make a decision on the plan as well as required blight ordinance for the county. The Wright City Board of Aldermen also is scheduled to take action on the two proposals related to the EEZ Thursday evening. That meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at city hall in Wright City. Once all the governmental bodies have pledged support of the EEZ draft plan and adopted blight ordinances, a formal application will be sent to the Missouri Department of Economic Development for its consideration. The application could be sent by this Friday, May 24, providing the plan wins approval by the county and Wright City. The DED could make its decision by early June. The area within the proposed EEZ extends east from the Warren-Montgomery County line along Interstate 70 to the eastern municipal limits of Wright City. The area includes a 131-acre portion of a larger tract chosen by CertainTeed Corporation recently as the location for a new shingle manufacturing plant and warehouse facility. The property is situated at the intersection of Interstate 70 and Scudder Ranch Road. The remaining 55 acres of the property for the new CertainTeed facility is in Montgomery County. The five governmental entities within the area proposed for the designated EEZ are Warren County, Truesdale, Warrenton, Wright City and the Village of Pendleton. City of Warrenton Logo Picture File
