The Warren County R-III School Board unanimously approved a new radio communication system for the water tower near Warrior Ridge.
The board accepted a bid of $43,992.11 from Motorola Solutions. This will not be an annual fee, and the district will pay the full sum in the next three to five years.
Beforehand, the district was using the Ameren tower for system communications to their buses. However, starting this year the annual fee was steadily increasing by a couple of thousand dollars per year.
“It was very reasonable and was around $100 a year to then $10,000, $12,000 to $15,000 a year. We knew this was not going to work and we needed to figure out what our alternative options were,” R-III Superintendent Gregg Klinginsmith said. “Once we ran all our tests, this appears to be our best option.”
The hardware will be replaced once school is out at the end of this year. District officials noted the system will be ready to go in time for summer school, as well as when the students return in the fall.
Klinginsmith added they had reached out to multiple different companies but decided Motorola was the best company to recommend to the board.
The district has used this company in the past and some of the buses are already compatible with the receiver. For the buses that are not compatible yet, they will be upgraded over the summer.
