Warren County R-III approves assessment contract

The Warren County R-III Board of Education recently approved a contract for a state approved assessment.

The board unanimously approved the Star assessment contract for just over $17,000. The district is allowed to apply for a one-time reimbursement of actual costs for state approved kindergarten through third grade assessments up to $8 per student. The Star assessment costs $7.25 per student.

“We will apply of course for the reimbursement of that,” Warren County R-III Superintendent Gregg Klinginsmith said. “But after that, I don’t know if the funding will be available. But we will go ahead and purchase this K-8. When we have two different systems between the elementary and the middle school, it’s hard to do any real linear study of how things are going.”

Klinginsmith stressed the reimbursement for kindergarten through third grade is only listed as a one-time reimbursement. The district may need to pay the entire contract in future school years.

Board Vice-President Sarah Janes asked about the impact of the new assessment on teachers. With the requirement, Klinginsmith said it is important to take away a current requirement from district teachers. Klinginsmith anticipates teachers will stop giving the current assessments.

“They can continue to give those if they like but it wouldn’t be required like they are now,” Klinginsmith said. “This would be the new required assessment that teachers would have to give. It’d be at the beginning of the year and the end of the year at a minimum. And then it will probably be a midway test too just to see how we’re doing. So three times a year would be the requirement on that.”

Klinginsmith stressed the district assessment committee, which is comprised of teachers, recommended the district utilize the Star assessment. The state offered four assessment options as part of the requirement.

Board approves SpedTrack contract

The Warren County R-III school board also approved a contract with Spedtrack at this month’s board meeting.

The $11,780 contract is for software to manage the district’s special education paperwork. The contract will be paid out of the district’s special education budget.

Klinginsmith noted concerns with Infinite Campus’ special education models. The district recently switched to the Infinite Campus student information system since the SISK12 system is going away, Klinginsmith said. The special education module was not up to par for the district, prompting the contract with SpedTrack.

“All the districts in the state that are currently using Infinite Campus, none of them are using Infinite Campus special education module out of concerns and compliance and that sort of thing,” Klinginsmith said.

The board approved a one-year contract with SpedTrack.
