Individuals and families are invited to walk or run to raise money for a debilitating disease Saturday, Sept. 24.The race, Slim’s Journey, aims to raise money for the Freidreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA). FARA’s goals are to slow, stop and reverse Freidreich’s Ataxia.Slim’s Journey is a 5K run and 2.5K walk through Warrenton. It will begin and end at College United Methodist Church, 701 East Main.The route includes running past the middle school and through the shaded streets of the older Warrenton neighborhoods.Freidreich’s Ataxia, which is diagnosed in 1 in 50,000 people worldwide, affects the nervous system and the heart. It’s a progressive disease that’s usually diagnosed in young people.The first symptoms may be muscle weakness and lack of balance and coordination.The event will be timed and awards will be presented at the end of the race.Participants will receive a free T-shirt while supplies last.Julie Myers is the race director.
