Volunteers with the Wright City Cemetery Memorial Society will present “stories of the past” during a special program Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Scenic Regional Library Branch in Wright City.The free program begins at 6 p.m. in the meeting room at the library on Wildcat Drive.The presenters of the “Voices of the Past” program will give a glimpse into the lives of several notable residents and others who endured hardships and tragedies during their lifetime.The story of the only known member of the Confederate Army buried in the Wright City Cemetery will be shared. Dr. Algernon Loving was a surgeon for the Confederacy during the Civil War. After the war, Dr. Loving set up a medical practice in Wright City. Longtime educator Ellouise Hasekamp spent many years in a one-room schoolhouse and later served as principal of the Wright City Elementary School. Powetan Foristell Bird’s family was among the early settlers of this area, and she later married the founder of Foristell, Pierre Foristell.Among the other stories that will be told are that of a woman who perished in the Katie Jane Nursing Home fire some 60 years ago, and two women who worked hard providing for their families while dealing with personal difficulties.The Memorial Society’s annual cemetery walk is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 29.For more information, contact Marie Hollenbeck 636-745-1025.
