Warrenton junior Jerrett Villinger picked up where he left off last season, capturing his second Fort Zumwalt North championship over the weekend.
Villinger pinned Zumwalt North’s Brendan Keeling in the first period of the 160-pound championship match.
Villinger advanced to the championship match by beating Joe Stegall of Mehlville, 3-1.
“He looked tough all tournament,” Warrenton Head Coach Kevin Fowler said. “He had a pretty good kid in the semis and that was a close match on the scoreboard, but that kid never really had a chance to score on us or beat us. It was a good, controlled match for us.
Villinger, a two-time state qualifier, won his first two matches by technical falls.
“We talked to Jerrett about opening up more in the first period and getting a big lead, and he did that in the championship match,” Fowler said. “We focused on starting quicker, and that’s something we felt he was lacking. But he turned that around and went out and scored a bunch of points in the final before he pinned him. That was a good match for him.”
Bryce Edison finished the tournament 2-1 to capture fifth place in the 106-pound division.
After falling to Zumwalt North’s Ayden Daniels, 15-12, in the quarterfinals, he reeled off two wins to end the tournament.
In the fifth-place match he beat Mehlville’s Andrew Hutson, 10-6.
“He dropped down from 113 and went out and wrestled really well. Even the match that he lost, he was in the match and had a chance to win that one,” Fowler said. “He won out after that, and that’s encouraging because it was basically his first varsity tournament experience. It was a good tournament for him, and he’s going to continue to wrestle hard for us. That’s the best thing about Bryce, he’s going to give you great effort.”
Ben Chernaskey (170) pinned Liberty’s Hunter Perkins in the opening round to advance to the winner’s bracket.
He defeated McCluer’s Albert Brown, 6-3, but lost to Ryder Kuenzel of Union in the fifth-place match, 11-8.
“A couple days beforehand, he beat the guy who won it (Hannibal’s Austin Carroll), so honestly it wasn’t a great tournament for Ben,” Fowler said. “But sometimes I forget he’s a first-year varsity kid in his first varsity tournament. He’s one of our leaders, and I’ll know he’ll continue to improve.”
Other than Villinger and Zach Alexander (152) the Warriors battled with an unexperienced roster at Zumwalt North, finishing 12th out of 18 teams.
“These guys are just getting their feet wet and getting a taste of it,” Fowler said. “Every weight class had a few really good kids, but the depth wasn’t as tough as some of the tournaments we’ll go to because we have a tough tournament schedule.”
The team continues its tough slate when it travels to the Farmington Duals Saturday morning.
