Warren County Commissioners Thursday told The Record that collection of local use tax revenues will begin in July. The tax, which is imposed on items purchased outside Missouri's borders where state sales taxes do not apply, was approved by voters in April. Local use taxes primarily are levied on the purchase of larger items such as vehicles, boats and trailers. More than 40 Missouri counties levy local use taxes on out-of-state purchases. Warren County's local use tax will total 1.5 percent and will be divided evenly between three county funds — general revenue, law enforcement and capital improvements. To date, county revenues are running behind budgeted projections for the 2013 fiscal year, according to Presiding Commissioner Arden Engelage. Engelage expressed hope that revenues generated by the local use tax will help cover the current shortfall in revenue. "We want to express our appreciation to the voters for their support in April," he added.
