A number of candidates filed this week for positions on the Warrenton Baoard of Aldermen. Four seats, including mayor, will be decided in the April election. The filing deadline is Jan. 19, 2010. The municipal election will be held April 6, 2010. Voters will elect candidates in Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 3, along with mayor. All terms are for two years. Ward 1 Two candidates filed for the Ward 1 seat Tuesday morning, including the longtime incumbent and a politic newcomer. Jerry Cullom, who is finishing her third term, will face John Cornell. Retired from the U.S. Postal Service, Cullom said her goals have not changed over the years. "My main interest in taking care of the citizens," Cullom said. Having lived in Warren County his entire life, Cornell is employed as an investigator in the prosecutor's office. His father, Gene, is currently the county treasurer. Cornell said it's time to see a new face on the board. "I think I got something to offer," he said. "At some point you have to have input and not sit on the sideline. I think it's good to get a fresh perspective." Ward 2 Having served in the same capacity since 1996, Fred Flake is seeking his eighth term on the board. He was the lone Ward 2 candidate to file by press time. He currently serves as board president. Flake said he remains eager to continue serving as a public official. "It's interesting and always a learning experience," he said. "You can always see some accomplishments and better living conditions for the residents." He acknowledged the city has made extensive progress during his long tenure on the board. "We've seen a lot of changes and developments," Flake said. "The majority of it has been for the good of the city." Ward 3 So far a political newcomer is the lone person to file for the seat currently held by Jim Dreyer. Don Broering, who lives in the Isaac Estates subdivision, filed for Ward 3 alderman Tuesday morning. His only public service experience was more than 15 years ago when he served one term as an alderman in Chillicothe, Ill. He has lived in Warrenton since 1996 and is a retired General Motors worker. "I enjoyed the work I did before," Broering said. "I was raised in a family where the belief was to do public service. I have the time to do it now." Dreyer said Tuesday night he intends on running for a second term. BREAKOUT Mayor: Noncommittal on Future Warrenton Mayor Greg Costello has yet to indicate publicly whether he will seek another term in that capacity. Filing for the April election began Tuesday. He declined to say Tuesday night if he intended on filing. The deadline to run for the April 6, 2010 election is Jan. 19, 2010. As of press time, no candidates had surfaced for mayor. Costello previously served as mayor for 12 years (1986-1998) until taking a break from public office. He served as an alderman for two separate terms beginnng in 2003 and 2006. He was elected mayor again in 2008.
