The Warrenton golf team took advantage of playing on its home course last week, finishing second in the Red Division (329) in the 43rd Warrenton Invitational at Warrenton Golf Course.
Sophomore Travis Toebben led the Warriors with a 74 while finishing second in the division, behind St. Charles’ Ben Bohr (73).
“He was not pleased with his nine-hole score the day before, and he came out focused and ready to go,” Warrenton Head Coach Aaron Jinkerson said.
Toebben, who qualified for the state tournament last spring, did what his coach is always preaching.
He avoided “blowup” holes.
He shot two birdies, 10 pars and six bogeys to finish 4-over par.
“Playing on our home course, I knew he had a good chance to avoid those blowup holes,” Jinkerson said. “He was poised and seemed prepared, which was great to see.”
After bogeys on holes No. 6, 7, 9 and 10, Toebben settled down and connected on pars or birdies on six of his final eight holes.
“He really knows where his shots are going to go, and that’s huge at the high school level,” Jinkerson said. “He’s even-keeled, too, which really helps.”
Warrenton’s Brendan Schanuel joined Toebben on the medal stand after shooting a 13-over 83, good enough for 11th in the division.
Brenden Day and Tanner Burns (86) tied for 15th, but missed out on medals after losing a scorecard playoff.
When tied for a medal, scores are taken from the toughest-rated hole on the course.
“Having two in the top 15 was great, and almost medaling four guys was good to see,” Jinkerson said.
Ben Mertens rounded out the scoring for the Warriors with a 93.
Warrenton will compete in the GAC Tournament next Wednesday before preparing for the district tournament May 1.
As for Toebben, his coach hopes he has another postseason run in him this spring.
“I would hope so,” Jinkerson said. “We’re in a tough district, so he’ll have to be on his game that day. But he’s certainly capable of advancing.”
