For the Wright City girls basketball team, a tough season came to an end Saturday in district play with a 57-13 loss to Hermann.
The Wildcats finished the 2020-2021 campaign with a record of 5-16, which included victories over Louisiana, Bourbon, Northwest Academy, Principia and Wellsville-Middletown.
Head coach Dan Friedel told The Record that despite the losing record this year, the Wildcats will miss their departing seniors, Abby Raines and Emily Schanuel, who led the team in scoring and rebounding on the season.
“Our seniors have been a great influence on our program over the last couple of years,” he said. “We need more girls with the levels of perseverance and a desire to improve that our seniors provided for us. We will miss them.”
There are some key players set to return, too, including sophomore Jasmin Simpson, who was an integral part of the team this season.
“Our leading scorer and rebounder this year was Jasmin,” said Friedel. “She is a do-it-all forward that can help handle the basketball, score it, and can be an elite defender at times. She is going to be a building block for the program over the next two years.”
Simpson won’t be the only one asked to step up next season, as the Wildcats will lean heavily on underclassmen who are set to step up.
“Jasmin, Abby Vossen, Katie Schanuel and Kaedyn Johnson will be asked to do a lot for us next year. The spring and summer is going to be an extremely important time for our girls to put in work and improve their games,” said Friedel. “We have a large group of freshmen that came out this past season. They all have a chance to be good varsity players at some point in their career. They are going to be called upon to take on an increased role next year. Developing them is a big key to the success of the program.”
