It’s been a spring of learning for Gavin Thompson.
The Warrenton freshman golfer took well to the game of high school golf and, for that, got high marks.
Those high marks come in the form of an all-conference spot as his 30 accumulated points between conference matches and tournaments were good enough for second-team GAC North all-conference as the 11th-best individual season total among all conference golfers.
"It was really cool being able to accomplish this as a freshman,” Gavin Thompson said. “It just finally shows all the hard work I've put in is paying off."
Gavin Thompson’s work wasn’t the only bright spot for the Warrenton golf team.
Senior Owen Thompson finished just ahead of his younger brother with 32 points to make the top 10 in individual points and to make the GAC North second-team all-conference squad, as well. Junior Ethan Leavitt finished 14th in the conference point standings, accumulating 20 overall points while junior Lucas Eskew also made the conference leaderboard, earning a pair of conference points.
While his personal accomplishment, obviously, meant a lot to the senior, seeing his younger brother and the younger Warriors’ team grow meant the world to Owen, he said.
“Helping the younger guys with their shots and keeping them from getting discouraged really was important to me,” Owen said. “It (the all-conference spot) was nice but seeing all these younger guys so focused meant a lot. They didn’t just walk up and hit a shot and then walk up and hit another. They were always out there thinking about it and that was great.”
The top six golfers in terms of point totals earn first-team honors while golfers seven through 12 make the second team.
While the Warriors shot 349 and the team’s score was just three strokes out of second place at the conference tournament, it was Gavin’s 84 which earned rave reviews from his older brother, who shot 87 in the event on April 30 at St. Peters Golf Course.
“He’s had such a great season and he’s grown so much from this point last year,” Owen said. “We played a lot this past summer and worked (on our games). It’s great to see us both have (all-conference) medals.”
