The Wildcats and Warriors tie for first place in triangular tournament

The Warrenton, Wright City and Holt girls golf programs competed in a triangular at the Warrenton Golf Course on Sept. 12.

The Warriors and Wildcats tied for first place in overall team scores, each shooting a 218. Holt took last place with a 240. Warrenton’s win over Holt was a conference win.

Morgan Nute of Wright City took first place once again, something she has consistently been doing since the season started. Nute shot an even par and ended with a score of 38.

Head Coach Shannon Wells is hoping Nute can keep her game consistent, while still improving.

“She’s pretty good about diagnosing her swing and she knows what she needs to do to get better,” Wells said. “We’re hoping she doesn’t peak too soon and she just keeps getting better as we go along.”

Jenna Marschel led the Warriors with a score of 48, Haley Rausch finished with 53, Paige Palmer had a score of 55 and Lily Miles scored a 57.

Marschel, Rausch and Miles all scored individual conference points.

“[Wright City] is always going to be tough, but to have three girls score individual conference points, that’s a pretty good day for us,” Head Coach Kelly Anderson said.

Overall, Wells has seen improvement all around from his players whether they were returning golfers or new to the sport.

He noted that Abby Schanuel's scores have been progressing and getting lower and lower the more she plays. Senior Riley Schaefer showed improvement throughout the nine-hole match and Zucely Uribe is starting to
lower her scores.

Schanuel finished with a score of 56, Schaefer shot a 60 and Uribe finished with a 64. Wells is hoping to see Uribe start to finish in the 50s.

“And then the others, we’re just looking for them to progress and get better to where they can compete at a higher level with varsity. They’re all brand new, so anything that they can do, makes it good,” Wells said.

Both varsity and junior varsity girls participated in the triangular for the Wildcats and Wells was impressed with what he saw.

“They’re learning to play faster and after the first couple initial holes, they got better as they went on,” Well said. “I’m proud of how they’re playing.”

The Warriors had four junior varsity girls playing and Anderson said she saw a couple of them shooting very well, which is a positive look moving into next year.

She often talks to them about playing with integrity and displaying golf etiquette.

“Seeing my girls learn all the rules and be able to play the game with integrity has been a really positive thing for us,” Anderson said.

The Warriors will play again at home against Winfield at 2:30 p.m. Wright City will play in the Versailles Invitational on Sept. 19.
