Jimmy Potts has joined The Warren County Record as its new managing editor, bringing with him a variety of experience from his decade-long career in journalism.Potts began his career in Bossier City, La., after quickly gaining notoriety when he resurrected the Bossier Parish Community College newspaper, The Kaleidoscope, following a two-year hiatus. Soon after ending his internship with The Bossier Press-Tribune, Potts joined the daily full time and eventually became its lead reporter, covering courts and crime as well as state, local and federal government. After his tenure in Bossier City, Potts shifted to covering sports for The Natchitoches Times. As the sports editor, Potts covered three high schools as well as Louisiana State University, Northwestern State University and various other sports teams based around Shreveport, La.Potts would eventually return to Kansas, where he grew up, and began working just hours from his hometown after taking a general assignment reporter position with The Chanute Tribune. At The Tribune, he covered a variety of beats that included everything from local and state government to the St. Paul High School eight-man football team.In 2014, Potts took another general assignment position but this time in Indiana. Although originally joining The Princeton Daily Clarion as a general assignment reporter, he was promoted to sports editor and replaced Indiana Sports Hall of Fame and Illinois Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Pete Swanson. While working for The Clarion, Potts greatly increased his sports writing experience by covering three high schools, Oakland City University, the Kentucky Derby, the Christian College National Invitational Basketball Tournament and the McDonald’s All-American Girls Basketball Game featuring Princeton native Jackie Young, a Notre Dame signee, who won the 2016 Dr. James Naismith Award, was named Indiana Ms. Basketball and led the Princeton Lady Tigers to a state championship in 2015.Potts accepted the managing editor position in late April and began working for The Record last Monday.“I look forward to working in Warren County,” Potts said. “As managing editor, I have a unique opportunity to prove myself as a leader both in the office and in the community. Replacing former Managing Editor Tim Schmidt will not be easy. He is a talented, respected journalist that was a community leader. I’m only looking to pick up where he left off and continue moving The Record forward.”Warren County Record
