Record Staff WriterWho knew Walt Disney spent his boyhood living in Marceline, Mo.? Who has ever heard of Marceline, knows where it is or anything else about it?Find the first installment of a new summer series for young readers in this week's paper, and learn answers to all of those questions. Marceline is the first stop of 11 in the “Missouri Road Trip 2015: Every Hero Has a Story” series, which features famous people from towns across the Show-Me state. The series is a statewide project produced by the Missouri Press Foundation.“We worked with the Missouri Division of Tourism to highlight hometowns around our state that produced people who made significant contributions to our world,” said Dawn Kitchell, The Record’s educational services director who also serves as education director for Missouri Press. “The series teaches them about these heroes and invites them to visit the hometowns.”Kitchell said the theme for the “Missouri Road Trip 2015: Every Hero Has a Story” series ties to the national Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) summer reading theme followed by the Scenic Regional library. In addition to Disney, the series will feature Harry Truman, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Dred Scott, Scott Joplin and Omar Bradley, and less well-known figures like Buck O’Neil, Helen Stephens, Marie Watkins Oliver, Rose O’Neil and Susan Elizabeth Blow. Each feature includes a brief background of the person and his or her life in that town. There also is a map with a star showing where the town is located, points of interest, things you can do there and where to go to learn more information.Chances to Win PrizesFamilies who read the features are eligible to win prizes from the Missouri Division of Tourism. Each installment of the series will include a code that parents can input online to win a $50 gas card. At the end of the series, one family will win the grand prize, a trip across Missouri Highway 36 — The Way of American Genius. And families who choose to extend their learning by getting in the car and visiting any of the towns featured in the series can post photos of them on Twitter, using #MoRoadTrip15.The Twitter team @VisitMO will select a fan of the week each week and share their photo on its social media outlets. Nominate a Hometown HeroThe Record also invites readers of all ages to nominate someone they consider a Hometown Hero.Anyone can participate — children and adults. All they need to do is, in 200 words or less, nominate someone who is a hero to them.A selection of the entries will be featured in The Record this fall. The deadline to nominate heroes is Aug. 15. Entries may be made by mail or by visiting warrencountyrecord.com/hero.
