It only took about two hours for officers from three law enforcement agencies to track down a suspect accused of crashing his pickup truck into a doublewide trailer in Wright City and then fleeing on foot. Thanks to the nose of Bronto, the Warren County Sheriff's Department K-9, police were able to locate the man in a residence nearby from where the accident occurred following a short manhunt. The suspect was identified as Jason Luther, 35, of Pine Forest Road, according to Wright City Police Chief Douglas Saulters. Police said Bronto tracked Luther to another residence on Pine Forest Road and that an anonymous tip was received stating Luther was inside the home. Once the homeowner opened the front door and saw Bronto, he apparently yelled out to Luther that officers knew he was inside. Luther was taken into custody without incident. Coincidentally, the county's K-9 unit was a huge assistance in the same week the Wright City Police Department began a fundraising campaign to purchase its own drug dog. "It's another example why a K-9 is needed," Saulters said. "We're fortunate the Warren County Sheriff's K-9 was available." Once found, Luther was airlifted to St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur. Police said Luther was injured in the crash when his head smacked the front windshield. Formal criminal charges have yet to be filed against Luther, but are expected following his release from the hospital. Authorities don't expect charges to be filed against the homeowners of the residence where Luther was found. Police were dispatched to the motor vehicle accident at 4:23 p.m. and discovered a pickup truck had run into the residence on Fir Tree Lane. Upon arrival, the driver could not be found and officers learned the man, identified as Luther, had fled on foot. Officers from the Warren County Sheriff's Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted in locating Luther. Police said Luther crashed the pickup following a domestic incident and was likely inattentive and speeding at the time. At least one person was in the trailer, police said, but was not in the vicinity where the truck struck the trailer. A parked vehicle in the driveway also was damaged. According to online court records, Luther was convicted earlier this year and placed on probation for misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest. -recnews@centurytel.net
