Streaking Warriors eye GAC crown

Record Managing EditorOn the heels of an 17-game winning streak and an unbeaten mark in the conference, the Warrenton softball team’s season is shaping up for a lengthy postseason run.But Head Coach Trevor Hibbs is making sure his squad refrains from looking too far down the road.“You never want to get caught looking,” he said. “We just take one pitch at a time, one game at a time. We just want to get better.”Before the Warriors think too much about the playoffs, a third consecutive conference crown is in reach. They sport a 18-1 record overall and 7-0 mark in the GAC heading with three of the final regular-season games against conference opponents. The conference crown could be decided this Thursday in a road game at Winfield, which is 10-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The two teams will square off again on Oct. 1 in Warrenton.“We just want to go out and hit the ball hard, pitch well and play good defense,” Hibbs said. “We want to get better every time we go out and learn from our mistakes.”The Warriors easily swept all three games during their home tournament held Saturday. In the round-robin affair, they beat Fort Zumwalt East 16-0, Liberty 11-0 and Hannibal 15-3. The offense pummeled opponents’ pitching, pounding out a combined 39 hits in the three games“We were keeping our hands inside the ball very well,” Hibbs said. “We did an outstanding job on waiting on pitches and driving them the opposite way.“We have good pitching, good defense. If our bats stay like this, we will do well. The key is to keep hitting.”In the third and final game that decided the tournament championship against Hannibal, Warrenton jumped ahead 3-1 in the first inning and led 6-2 after three innings. In the fourth, the Warriors broke the game open with five runs, three of which were scored with two outs. Amanda Vehlewald knocked in two with a single and Abby Meyers had a run-scoring hit.Kaylee Anderson, Jenny Jansen and Destinee Frost all had three hits in the victory. Erica Rugh, Jansen and Vehlewald recorded three RBIs, while Anderson, Jansen and Frost each scored three runs.On the mound, Taylor Nordwald pitched all six innings. Only one of the three runs scored against her was earned as she struck out three and walked none.In the tournament’s two earlier games, Nordwald’s bat and arm helped Warrenton beat Zumwalt East in three innings. Nordwald went 3-for-3 at the plate, including a homer, with six RBIs and three runs. She did not allow a hit in her short pitching stint and struck out two.Offensively, Meyers knocked in two runs with two hits, while Frost and Rugh scored three times.Against Liberty, Frost had a home run as part of her two-hit game and knocked in four. She also scored two runs along with Emma Tinnin. On the mound, Jansen pitched the first three innings to get the win as she combined on the shutout with Nordwald and Anderson.Warriors
