As the Warrenton girls basketball team gears up for districts, five simple words will echo in their minds – “One game at a time.”
“I’m putting that in their heads,” Head Coach Hannah Logan said. “We’ll wait and see who we play, we’ll plan for them and then go out and give it our best.”
The Warriors are the No. 4 seed in the Class 5, District 4 tournament, which is hosted by St. Dominic High School. They will play fifth-seeded Holt in a first-round game at 5 p.m. on March 6. The winner advances to play either top-seeded Fort Zumwalt South or eighth-seeded McCluer North in the semifinals on March 8.
The district championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on March 11.
“I think that we’re in a good spot. We have a very good chance of being successful with our seed and within districts,” Logan said. “We really just need to focus as a team, take it one game at a time and not look into the future and think we got this.”
Warrenton will play Holt for the third time this season. The Warriors beat the Indians 44-34 at home on Jan. 21 and lost 49-46 Feb. 25.
Logan said her team’s first mission at districts is to concentrate on its first-round game against Holt and not look ahead to the semifinals or the championship game.
“They are a very young team,” the Warrenton coach said. “We had a lot of success when we played them the first time.”
She added the main goal at the moment is to get past the first round of districts. The last time the Warriors got past the first-game hurdle was in 2022, where they eventually won districts.
She also stressed the importance of not letting one mistake snowball into more mishaps.
“We can’t let one bad thing lean into another. Somebody has to be there to stop it and get things going back in the right direction,” Logan said.
Throughout the season, unity has been a hallmark of the Warriors' play, with strong teamwork and cohesion fueling their success.
“We all have to believe in each other and know that it’s not going to take one person, it’s going to take the whole team to be successful,” Logan said. “It’s potentially somebody’s last game, so it comes down to who has more fight and who wants to keep going.”
Warrenton will take a 11-14 record into the postseason.
