Hundreds of Special Olympics athletes from throughout the region will gather for the second year for the Wright City’s Special Olympics track and field meet Friday, April 27.Cheered on by spectators, the athletes will compete in jumping, throwing, walking, running and assisted events, in a day of fun and recognition for their accomplishments. The track meet will be held at the Wright City High School athletic complex, with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m.Between the athletes, coaches, support volunteers and spectators, event coordinator Jennifer Werner said she expects close to 1,000 people to be on hand.Participants from Lincoln, St. Charles and Warren County school districts are set to attend.Anyone in the community is invited to come out, cheer from the stands and enjoy food and entertainment at the free event.Featured guests will include Fredbird, Louie and Ruffy, the mascots of the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues and River City Rascals.“We would love to have as many people come to cheer on the athletes as possible,” said Werner, adding that the event will include music from a DJ this year along with a photo booth. After the 10 a.m. opening ceremony, athletes of ages from 3 years old to high school seniors will participate in a variety of events and receive awards. For the athletes and the volunteers who help and encourage them, taking part in the track and field meet can be a major life moment.“It can transform the lives of all involved and can improve the health of athletes,” Werner explained. “It builds character and gives them an awareness of their own worth, ability, courage and capacity to grow and improve — and really just be the best they can be, and an opportunity to share their strengths.”Many Wright City High School students volunteer to help run the track meet, which receives support from district administration and a number of community organizations as well.Local police, firefighters and paramedics will all make return appearances this year. Last year first responders helped award medals to event winners.

Participants at the 2017 Special Olympics track and field meet in Wright City show their enthusiasm during a running event. This year's Special Olympics meet is April 27 at the Wright City High School athletic complex, starting at 10 a.m.
