After a lifetime on the diamond, recent Wright City graduate Sophia Wegrzyn is taking her love for softball to the next level.
Wegrzyn signed her official letter of intent to play college softball at Principia College in Elsah, Ill., on May 13.
Softball has been a central part of Wegrzyn’s life since she first picked up a glove at four years old. Her decision to play in college was simple.
“(I wanted) to continue to grow my skills and love for softball,” she said.
Wegrzyn will play for a program that competes in the NCAA Division III level. She said choosing to continue her softball career at Principia wasn’t hard.
“I had one phone call with the coach. Then, I went to (the) campus for a visit and fell in love with the people and the program,” Wegrzyn said. “I verbally committed on my visit.”
Wegrzyn said she was in awe of the Principia campus as soon as she stepped foot on the college campus. Principia is located 40 miles north of St. Louis.
“I love the environment and the campus was beautiful,” she said.
While she’s at Principia, Wegrzyn hopes to follow up on her outstanding senior season that included seven home runs, a .409 batting average, 23 strikeouts and an all-district award. She finished her softball career with 115 hits.
Wegryzn played select softball with Midwest Intensity and the Missouri Mariners.
Wegrzyn plans to major in elementary education at Principia. Her goal is straightforward.
“My main goal is to go into this next season and just have fun and make as many memories as I can,” she said.
