Slow offense exposes errors for Warriors

The Warrenton baseball team entered its first conference matchup of the season with high hopes, but fell short in a 7-0 setback at St. Charles West on Tuesday.

Coach Eric Burle noted outside of their latest loss, the season did start well. The Warriors are now 6-3 overall on the season and 0-1 in the GAC North.

“Offensively at the beginning of the year is really what carried us,” he said. “Our offense came out playing really well and it probably covered up some of the mistakes we saw today.”

However, he acknowledged that the lack of offensive production in the game exposed some underlying issues. Miscommunication on the bases and fundamental mistakes, particularly in the fifth inning, played a significant role in the team’s unraveling.

“We had a couple of defensive miscues in the fifth inning and we weren’t swinging well, so we're probably taking it out on the field,” Burle said. “We didn’t control our emotions like we needed to.”

The Warriors trailed by just one run before a six-run explosion in the fifth inning by St. Charles West. Burle noted the mental obstacles at the plate and some defensive mistakes led to the turning point.

He also added some players have been pressing at the plate recently. Warrenton was held to seven hits in the loss.

“We just were not feeding off each other, some guys are not swinging it well and it’s kind of gone to their head a little bit,” Burle said.

While the result was not necessarily something Burle expected, he knew it was going to happen at some point due to the building pressing issues at the plate that eventually boiled over.

“We have always battled with these guys for conference and I think some of the guys need to understand that we have a little bit of a target on our back because we have played well the last couple years,” he said. “I think part of that was maybe them thinking they were going to be able to come and just show up to this game.”

Warrenton did have the opportunity to play St. Charles West again the next day on April 9. Burle noted he has no worry his team will be fired up and ready for the rematch.

“They’ll be fired up and ready to handle the adversity, we just gotta play better,” Burle said.

The Warriors came back from the loss and ended up winning their second matchup against St. Charles West 2-1.

Warrenton will play at 10 a.m. on April 12 at home against Fort Zumwalt East.
