The Warrenton cross country teams ended its regular season on a strong note at the Clayton Invitational on Oct. 24.
The Warriors had seven runners set personal-record times at the Clayton meet. They were
Alex Cutler, Makenna Faubion, Maria Garcia-Baquero, Noah Joens, Ken Le, Landon Neace and Payton Street.
Neace, a freshman, PR’ed for the second consecutive meet. He placed 19th out of 105 runners with a time of 17 minutes, 55 seconds. Neace shaved off 54 seconds from his previous best time.
“(Neace) started off pretty conservative but as the race went on, he just moved up. Each time I saw him, he had moved up five to 10 spots,” Warrenton coach Jeremy Collins said. “It was great to see him go out there and really challenge himself when things got uncomfortable. This should give him a lot of confidence going into the district meet.”
Le placed 81st with a 20:04 and also ran a PR for a second consecutive meet. He improved his previous time by 28 seconds.
“He is a very hard worker and I am very happy that he had a great race,” Collins said.
Alex Cutler finished 94th with a 20:56, shaving off 1:13 from his previous-best time. Joens finished 105th in 26:23, 57 seconds off of his previous-best time.
Faubion finished 21:33, nine seconds from her previous-best time at the Gans Creek Classic in September. She also earned a medal after placing 12th.
“She did a great job moving up throughout the race,” Collins said. “She should be confident going into districts.”
Garcia placed 63rd in a 24:34, 1:36 off of her previous time. Street dropped 1:21 from her previous-best time, running a 24:38 in her 65th-place finish.
“It was awesome to see those three (Faubion, Garcia-Baquero and Street) work together and have a fantastic race,” Collins said.
Other competitors for the Warriors were Matt Craven (26th, 18:09), Jonathan Sweitzer (48th, 18:48) Sophie Bennet (62nd, 24:32) and Taryn Sharp (81st, 31:06).
“Everyone went out there, competed and ran tough,” Collins said. “We have had some good workouts and talked about being mentally tough and they all did a great job.”
The boys team finished eighth and the girls placed 11th. There were 12 teams in each division.
Next up for Warrenton is the Class 4, District 3 Championship meet on Nov. 1 at Sioux Passage in Florissant.
“The course is considered to be one of the toughest courses in the state,” Collins said. “We will have to be mentally ready to run the hills and try to use the hills to our advantage.”
