Record Managing EditorA second man was sentenced to 17 years in prison for his role in a 2013 robbery of a Warrenton business.Frank Kelly Ashby II, 28, was sentenced during a court appearance last week in front of Presiding Judge Wes Dalton. In March, he pleaded guilty to felony second-degree robbery stemming from the incident.A second suspect, 23-year-old James Lewis, Warrenton, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in the robbery. Lewis had entered an Alford plea in the case, meaning he did not admit guilt, but conceded there was enough evidence for conviction.Police said Ashby drove Lewis to Midwest Gold and Silver, located at 616 n. Highway 47, on March 18, 2013. Ashby later returned to the business to pick Lewis up after the robbery was committed.Prior to the robbery, Ashby was seen entering and leaving Dollar General without making a purchase. It was later discovered that a pair of white latex gloves had been stolen from the store, according to police.Ashby was on probation at the time of the robbery. His criminal history includes previous convictions for theft, stealing, burglary, passing a bad check and fraudulently attempting to obtain a controlled substance.Earlier this year, Ashby pleaded guilty to two more felony charges for stolen property and stealing in an unrelated case. Dalton ordered the robbery sentence to run concurrent with the other charges.Noting his previous criminal history, Prosecuting Attorney Kelly King said she was pleased with the outcome.“He had been afforded an opportunity for probation and afforded an opportunity for treatment and continued to reoffend,” she told The Record.“The crimes got more serious and violent as time went on.”Police said Lewis entered Midwest Gold and Silver at approximately 4:15 p.m. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, white gloves and black panty hose covering his face and demanded money from an employee. Lewis was handed a bank bag containing approximately $2,300 and he exited the business.During the investigation, Warrenton police identified Lewis as a suspect and searched trash that was awaiting pickup at Lewis’ residence. They found a pair of white latex gloves and said the gloves matched the description of those worn by the suspect in the robbery, according to a probable cause statement.Lewis also allegedly called his girlfriend on the day of the robbery and informed her he had $1,400 in his possession. He spent some of the money, according to the probable cause statement, by purchasing clothes at Dollar General in Wright City about an hour after the robbery.A review of surveillance video from the store confirmed the purchase by Lewis, police said.Frank Ashby
