The Warrenton Planning and Zoning Commission has recommended approval of site plan for a Schnucks grocery store and additional retail space at the corner of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Highway 47.The site of the new stores is adjacent to Walgreens. Work has already begun to clear the 15-acre property, which Schnuck Markets Inc. purchased in November.Robert Klahr, an attorney for the developer, said the Schnucks location will be a 36,000-square-foot store. The developer also plans to build 35,000 square feet of additional retail space adjacent to the store.Schnucks anticipates employing 15 to 20 full-time staff and 40 to 50 part-time staff, most of which will be new hires, Klahr said.The store will be accessible from Highway 47 and Veterans Memorial Parkway. The site plan includes a sidewalk from Veterans Memorial Parkway to the store parking lot.The site plan for the development was presented during the planning and zoning commission’s regular meeting Jan. 4. The plan was originally set to be discussed in November, but was delayed.The site plan will now go to Warrenton’s Board of Aldermen for final approval. It will be discussed Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Warrenton City Hall, including a time for public comment.Klahr has previously met with the board of aldermen to request the city agree to the eventual use of a limited sales tax to reimburse over $4.3 million in development costs. A sales tax of up to 1 percent would be applied to purchases only within the 15-acre development site to repay certain costs of the project.A formal proposal to establish that limited tax has not yet come before the board.
