Rebounding stumps Wildcats in loss to Veritas

While the Wright City girls basketball team fought back, rebounding proved to be the main thing hindering them in its 63-51 loss to Veritas Christian on Feb. 14.

“We finally saw us scoring the ball more which is nice to see because we’ve kind of been in a slump here recently,” Elledge said. “But our rebounding definitely gave way too many second and third opportunities for Veritas.”

The momentum swung between Wright City and Veritas, specifically in the second quarter after the Wildcats narrowed a 12-point deficit to only two.

Wright City was down by only four points (25-21) at halftime.

After scoring just seven points in the first quarter, the Wildcats doubled that in the second, scoring 14. Elledge said he was pleased with the way his team performed in the second quarter.

“We just took the momentum, got a couple turnovers and used that to chip away,” Elledge said. “We started to take control a little bit, running our pace and frustrating the other team. Unfortunately, coming out after halftime, I think they kind of did that back to us."

Elledge said it was harder in the second half for his team to come back after they went down 10 points.

“We started the third quarter and just couldn’t get that momentum to catch back up,” Elledge said.

Overall, Elledge was pleased with the ball movement and increased scoring. In the past six games, the Wildcats have not been able to garner more than 50 points until Friday night’s game.

Sophomore Ada Ferrell led in points with 14, while Danika Graham recorded 12.

“We did a good job moving the ball around, taking our open shots, getting the ball in the hands of our main scorers and that definitely helped,” Elledge said. “[Graham] has come alive the last couple games here.”

Graham, Paige Rees, Alyvia Mikus, Bailey Love and Zoe Mitchell make up the senior class. Elledge added it will be a hard group to replace.

“It’s a good group of seniors and we’ll definitely miss all five of them,” Elledge said. “All five have been with the program the last four years, so it’s definitely going to be hard shoes to refill next year.”

Wright City dropped to a 7-15 record. They will play at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 at Wellsville-Middletown.
