Reaching for gold; man mows Olympic rings

If lawn mowing was an Olympic sport, David Anderson of Warrenton, might be a gold medalist. One evening, his wife Megan came home from work.“Our daughter, Kelsey, was watching the Olympics. He was going outside with paint and a tape measure,” she said. “I thought ‘What in the world is he doing?’ ”The next day, when the sun came up, she found out what he had been doing, and so did his neighbors in the Lake Chateau neighborhood. To entertain himself, his family and everyone else who could see his yard, he mowed the Olympic rings into his grass.“Everybody likes it. When we’ve been out, neighbors call to tell us people are in our yard talking pictures,” Megan said. The Andersons are Olympic fans. They watch as much as they can and have a particular interest in track and volleyball, sports Kelsey participates in.David, who served in Afghanistan and now serves as a volunteer firefighter, takes mowing seriously. He has mowed other grass designs, more and less complicated, and he likes to do it quickly when he can.“He does call it his racing lawn mower,” Megan said. The Andersons plan to keep the Olympic rings on display through the 2016 Olympics. Closing ceremonies are this Sunday, Aug. 21.“He’s getting ready to cut it again,” Megan said, “so it looks better.”
