Ben Randolph continues to be a source of success for the Wright City track team, which traveled to the Orchard Farm Invitational on Friday.The senior finally achieved his goal of breaking the school’s 800-meter record, eclipsing Larry Paul’s mark from 2006.“It was a great night with lots of personal bests,” said Coach Sue Wright.Randolph ran the race in 2:00, besting Paul by one second.“The competition was really good, and that’s what Ben needed, was somebody to push him,” said Wright. “I’m extremely happy, because he’s worked very hard to get to this point.”The senior claimed first-place honors in the 800, while guiding the 1600-meter relay to a new school record.The crew, also consisting of Lamone Davis, Alvin Chenoweth and Nick Mueller, clocked a 3:41.“Those guys did a tremendous job,” said Wright. “It was an awesome night for our kids as a whole.”The 1600-meter relay actually second, while the 3200-meter relay, consisting of the same group, won with a time of 8:51.Kody Morgan earned another pair of medals in the hurdles, taking second in both events. He finished the 110-meter race in 17.08 seconds, while logging a 44.40-second finish in the 300-meter hurdles.“Kody has been doing really well,” said Wright. “He’s working hard to cut down his times and chip away at his personal bests.”Chad Sherman also competed in the hurdles, placing sixth in both races.Senior Cody Klemp earned points in the distance races, finishing fifth in the two-mile run at 11:19 and taking sixth in the mile at 5:05.The Wildcats’ 400-meter relay team placed fourth in 46.98 seconds.“Everybody is improving their times, and that’s what we want,” said Wright.While most of the boys success has come on the track, the girls team has enjoyed more balance.Jynna Fritz has been pacing the Wildcats on the track, performing well in the distance races.She finished third in the mile with a 5:58, while Erin Tomschin clocked a 6:17 to place sixth. Fritz took fourth in the 800-meter race at 2:44.“She’s starting to get used to running both of those events and has done an excellent job,” said Wright.Courtney Lawson was also strong in the distance events, placing third in the two-mile run at 15:04.In the field events, Amy Janowski finished third by clearing 7 feet.“She has been improving her jumps a lot,” said Wright.While it wasn’t one of her better outings, senior Brittany McPike managed to land the Wildcats points in both the shot put and discus.She placed second in each, throwing 91 feet, 3 inches in the discus and 31 feet, 7 inches in the shot put.
