Wright City R-II buildings are receiving some summer “spruce-up” work that will be completed in time for the start of the new school year. The work is part of a multiyear plan approved earlier by the board to help the district manage the upkeep of its buildings and athletic complex through 2017.The plan spreads out work estimated at $1 million over five fiscal years and is based on a comprehensive review of needs by a facilities study group.R-II Superintendent Chris Gaines gave a report on the progress on the facilities work to the school board during its July 18 meeting.“Our summer work is almost finished,” Gaines told the board. “We got a lot of painting done, new bathroom counters in the middle school are in place, and we’re installing new water fountains at the high school and at West (elementary).”Gaines said the work to replace four air conditioning units is continuing and expected to be completed in the next two weeks. New energy-efficient furnaces also have been installed, and an extra shower room at West Elementary School is in the works.Administrators reported that new floors have been installed in the high school band and health rooms. As part of the overall improvement plan, 18 HVAC units will be replaced at a pace of several per year through summer 2017.In its facilities program evaluation presented during the meeting, administrators stated that by using HVAC controls, the district has been able to reduce heat and A/C bills.
