Quilting group draws hundreds to school

Passersby may have mistaken the packed parking lot of Holy Rosary School in Warrenton for some sort of athletic event but instead over 150 people were gathering in the school cafeteria to craft quilts for wounded soldiers.Since its founding in 2005, Eastern Missouri Quilts of Valor has exponentially grown with its membership exploding from 23 original members to more than 150 from across the St. Louis area attending Friday’s event.“We have come for 10 years. We very seldom miss it,” said Charlotte Fry of St. Charles.Since 2005, the group has presented more than 2,150 quilts to injured servicemen and -women.“I never imagined this would grow this way. I had no idea this many ladies could still quilt,” said Eastern Missouri Quilts for Valor co-founder Jean Jaeger.Whether maimed in battle or suffering the after effects of post-traumatic stress disorder, Jaeger said the handmade quilts her group presents often give service-men and -women recovering from wounds something which tangibly reminds them of home.“We feel this helps in the healing process,” she said. “It seems like you always find the right quilt for the right person. We let them know people, who do not know them, care about them.”To learn more about the national organization visit www.qovf.org.To make donations to the local organization or for more information, call 636 456-3980.
