Facing a team it had beaten handily early last month, most of the Warrenton Senior Legion baseball team expected a repeat performance coming into Tuesday night. Though Union had other plans, Post 122 recovered and regained its focus to notch a 13-6 victory at home. "We came out this game with our heads up our (butts)," Nickelson said. "We came out sluggish and couldn't hit the ball. We had to wake up a little bit." Warrenton, which had knocked off Union 9-3 on June 9, just needed better at-bats facing a slower pitcher. Once Post 122 got its timing down, it started seeing better results late with seven of its 10 hits coming after the fourth inning. But before that, Warrenton (13-11) had grabbed the lead for good with a six-run third. "They are having fun and they get to the point where they have a little too much fun," Manager Jerry Carlyle said. "Part of that is my fault for not being a real disciplined coach. "They knew it was a non-league game. It's typical. It's human." Nickelson's contributions not only came at the plate, but also on the base paths and the mound. His first of two doubles came in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 5-4. After Eric Burton drove in Patrick McGuire with a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game, Nickelson scored the go-ahead run when a pitch bounced a few feet away from the catcher. On a close play at home, Nickelson just beat the tag. "I was thinking any ball in the dirt go," he said. "I thought the ball went a little bit farther than what it did." Nickelson also was on the mound for two innings when Post 122 took the lead. Nickelson was one of four players for Post 122 to finish with two hits. Both of his hits were run-scoring doubles coming on consecutive at-bats contributing to the mid-game rally. He also scored twice. Also collecting a pair of hits was Jared Sitze, Nick Mack and Matt Duren. Helped by Union having only eight players available and leaving a huge gap in the outfield, Nathan Utt's deep blast to center led to an inside-the-park home run in the eighth. "When we started hitting, I wasn't worried at all," said Nickelson, who was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. The awakening at the plate coincided with better results on the mound. Nickelson, who relieved starter Dalton Koch to begin the third inning, allowed two earned runs in two innings of work. He struck out four and walked three to earn the win. By the time lefty Nathan Eaklor took the mound in the top of the fifth, Warrenton was ahead 7-5. Eaklor was touched for an unearned run in his first inning, but followed with a scoreless sixth and seventh. The ball was then handed to Matt Duren, whose pitching stint included two scoreless innings. The pitching foursome combined to give up 10 hits, but stranded 10 of 15 runners in scoring position. Koch didn't get much support in the field as four errors in the first two innings led to three unearned runs. Koch escaped further damage by leaving runners on second and third in each of the first and second innings. Elsewhere on offense, McGuire scored a team-high three runs, while Duren and Sitze crossed home twice. Post 122 now prepares for the final stretch of the regular season. Warrenton hosts Wentzville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and is back home again Sunday versus St. Charles at 2 p.m. The final regular-season game is Tuesday at New Haven. "They are hitting pretty much except for the beginning of this game," Carlyle said. "They started to buckle down and started to scorch the ball."
