An eight-run sixth-inning rally was all the Warrenton Post 122 Seniors needed Friday night against Union, eventually winning 13-3 in seven innings.
After a pair of early outs, Post 122’s sixth inning looked anything but memorable.
But a two-out RBI single by Sebastian Camerena ignited the offense.
The Seniors batted around in the inning thanks to two hits by Matt Dildine, who scored both times and finished 2-for-4 on the evening.
Being a non-league contest, Post 122 Manager Scott Butler was able to get plenty of at-bats for role players like backup catcher Camerena, who went 1-for-4.
“Sebastian is one of the best backup catchers that anyone has,” Butler said. “He understands his role that he’s a backup catcher. He knows he’s not going to outplay (James) Dotson, but we put him behind the plate in the ninth because Dotson is our closer, and it worked out.”
The Seniors improved to 8-6 overall with the win, and were scheduled to travel to Sullivan Wednesday in another non-league game.
“We’ll use this game and the Sullivan game to get ready for Pacific Thursday,” Butler said. “We hope to be refreshed and tuned in for that game.”
Chris Garrett got the start on the mound for Post 122, giving up two earned runs in six innings of work.
He struck out three and walked one, and was relieved by Will Robinson in the seventh.
It was just the fourth appearance on the mound for Robinson this season.
He gave up two hits without an earned run.
“It was their chance to show me what they can do and to showcase their ability, and they did,” Butler said of his bench. “Some of them had a great night tonight. Will had a great night on the mound and J-Rice (Justin Rice) had a great day at the plate.”
The team had plenty of help from the regulars, as well.
Hunter Russell and Troy Muse combined to go 6-for-8 while scoring six times.
“It was nice to keep our starters fresh and locked in,” Butler said. “Troy was on base five times tonight, and that always helps set the table for the rest of the lineup.”
